Strength in One Design

The core focus of the Ullman Sails group for the past 40 years has been one-design sail development. Our sailmakers have been successful in creating the fastest sails for a wide range of classes. Everything else we do is an offshoot of this effort. We have brought this passion for sailmaking to the Optimist Class.

Design and Development

The Optimist racing designs originated from collaboration between our French and Italian lofts. Our intent was to design a sail that can win world class regattas and also be easy for a beginner to set up and sail to his potential. Through this collaboration many sails were designed and tested over the past four years. The result was the HORUS designs. These designs saw success in regattas all around Europe.

We have recently created a global network of sail designers and class experts to further facilitate sail development and sailor support. The design team started with our proven HORUS designs and improved them further to create the new Optimini, Optimus, and Optimax designs. These new designs were conceived using the latest deisgn and optimization software from Smar-Azure by a team of Ullman’s top sail designers. The result is an easy to set-up sail with a highly refined flying shape that allows sailors to achieve repeatable speed right out of the bag.

Ullman Radial Optimist Sail
Three different models for 2011 to match your size and sailing style:

optimini
The Ullman Optimini is designed for sailors weighing up to about 35 kg (77 lbs). This sail has a slightly flatter upper shape profile which allows smaller sailors to go fast without becoming overpowered too quickly. The radial panel layout allows the sail to hold its designed shape through a wide range of conditions. The Optimini will be easy to spot on the racecourse with its distinctive red seam stitching.

optimus
The Ullman Optimus sail is designed for sailors looking for a medium power sail. The sail was optimized for sailors between 37 - 45 kg (81 – 99 lbs) but is also a good sail for smaller sailors who are looking for a more powerful sail. This sail has a full enough shape to allow medium weight sailors to go fast in light air but it is not so deep that it becomes quickly overpowering. The Ullman Optimus sail has a sophisticated radial panel layout for shape holding across the wind range and distinctive blue stitching.

optimax
Designed for sailors over 45 kg (over 100 lbs), the Ullman Optimax is the most powerful sail in the Ullman lineup. The Optimax will help larger sailors power to the front of the fleet. Although targeted for larger sailors this sail can also be a good one for slightly smaller sailors who sail in choppy water and would like a sail with a more full shape. Radial panels allow the Optimax to have a full shape that doesn’t become too full when the wind builds.

Construction Highlights

  • The best cloth available on the market
  • Radial panels for optimum shape retention
  • A radial patch at the clew for the best shape
  • A large vision window for better visibility around the course
  • New Ullman styling:  Red, Blue, and White stitching
  • Two different battens – one stiffer than the other to hold the fastest shape
  • All of our sail designs come ready to compete with our in- depth race guide, sail numbers, vision window, tell-tales, IODA royalty tag, and long roll bag.
